Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator generated from the amino acid L-Arginine. The endothelium, a single layer of cells that lines your blood vessels, takes up the amino acid L-Arginine and through a series of reactions using the enzyme Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) produces nitric oxide and L-Citrulline as can be seen in Figure 1 below.

The nitric oxide from L-Arginine then causes the muscles within your blood vessels to relax, producing what is known as vasodilation.
